Christ Church is part of the Mortlake with East Sheen team ministry in south west London, is seeking an enthusiastic, talented and able musician to take up the post of Organist & Director of Music.

Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Music. Music plays an important part in the life of the church.

Christ Church East Sheen seeks an excellent choral practitioner to continue the development begun in 2022 of the music life of Christ Church. The role would suit a church musician keen on creative potential. A vacancy has arisen by the appointment of our current director as Director of Music at Newport Cathedral.

Our new Director of Music will have a passion for the wide traditions of choral music, and the strategic skills to advance our shared musical and worshipping life. They would work with all ages of varying skill from amateur to professional standard singers and understand the liturgical requirements for enhancing and enriching Sunday worship, occasional offices, and Christian festivals.

As well as directing the robed Church Choir, the Christ Church Consort was set up in 2023 to provide music for occasional offices (funerals and weddings) and other special services (usually three per year) when the Church Choir is not available. The Director of Music is responsible for booking suitable singers, with fees aimed at professional-standard musicians. Consort members are also sometimes employed as section leaders for big services with the Church Choir.

The church has also embarked on a series of Saturday early evening concerts, the Director of Music would work with the Team Vicar to build a programme of events which would be able to pay artists and feed into the general music fund.

There is a current focus on the nurturing and the recruitment of choristers remunerated from designated funds of the Chorister Award Scheme and also the maintenance and development of the adult choral scholars (currently 2). The regular volunteer choir practices on a Thursday evening.

Occasional offices rates (2024)

Funeral £140                            Wedding £180

Possible conductor fees are applied when families decide on using the consort and for this it is anticipated we engage other organists/musicians.

Christ Church is in the early stage of current musical development, so the role is not starting things from scratch but may be moulded to preferred ways of working in line with the mission action plan of the church.

The director of music is employed by the PCC but assigned the directorship of Christ Church, with line manager being the Team Vicar. Appointments subject to enhanced DBS check.

There are possibilities to work across the parish particularly on patronal services with joint choirs.
